Intra-arterial injection

An arterial line is used to monitor blood pressure directly and to obtain samples for arterial blood gas analysis. Arterial lines are generally not used to administer medications, since many drugs may lead to serious tissue damage and even require amputation of the limp.

Many patients in operation rooms and intensive care units (such as ICUs and CCUs) have multiple connections for various purposes. Other factors such as the need for urgent drug injections, high-stress situations, poor lighting environment, and fatigue medical practitioners can intensify the probability of wrong route drug injections.

Regardless of all current approaches, intra-arterial injection still occurs throughout the world. There is no way to eliminate injection ports at all or using only ports with one-way valves because medical practitioners need to wash out the line and administer some drugs such as Sodium Heparin to prevent temporary occlusion of the artery, thrombosis, and embolism.

Intra-epidural injection

An epidural catheter allows access to the epidural space for injecting local anesthetics and some other allowable medications. Wrong route/unintentional injections into an epidural port may occur when the epidural line is mistaken especially by less-skilled medical practitioners for a venous line and unauthorized drugs for regional anesthesia may be injected into the epidural space. Such injections are undesirable and may be damaging for patients and a wide range of adverse events may occur.

Unauthorized injection by patients venous/epidural/arterial injection by patients with a substance abuse history or suicidal tendencies is a serious concern. These patients may inject drugs without informing healthcare professionals which may lead to unwanted drug interactions and overdose.
